Following the death of King Edward, the kingdom of England becomes fragmented and divided, with various factions vying for control and dominance. Uhtred, a Saxon nobleman and skilled warrior, decides to try and reconcile the warring factions in order to unify the kingdom and bring about peace. Uhtred embarks on a perilous journey across the shattered land with his trusted companions, encountering many difficulties and impediments along the way.
